We hypothesize that RHDV may circulate through rodent species sympatric to the European rabbit, as a non-lethal infection. We provide evidence of cross-species transmission of RHDV between rabbits and mice, and of mice hosting viral ARN extensively. The detection of viral RNA in mice faeces and internal organs may reflect the presence of RHDV. It is unknown if RHDV replicated within mice and/or remained infectious, but we propose further research to answer this question.
