Oil dispersants enhance settling of suspended sediment particles in marine water. Nonionic surfactants are most effective components affecting particle settling. The effect is more profound at > neutral pH, low salinity and with humic acid. Oil dispersants promote formation of oil-mineral aggregates in seawater. Oil dispersants facilitate transfer of oil and PAHs to marine sediment.
