This study examines the elastic response of glass/epoxy laminated composite ogival shells subjected to low velocity impact at an arbitrary location by a solid striker. An analytic solution for prediction of transient displacement and induced stress and strain is presented. This solution, which has not been obtained previously, considers both contact and transverse shear deformation. Based on this solution, the contact force and transient strains induced in a shell by impact are studied. Impact experiments are also conducted on a simply-supported glass/epoxy ogival shell and the resulting strain responses examined. The results show that the contact force and strain response predicted using the present solution agree well with experimental measurements.
