Tuina is the Chinese form of reflex therapy used to treat functional and reversible diseases or dysfunctions similar to the well-known indications for acupuncture such as for instance pain, circulations problems, muscular dysbalance, or psychosomatic problems. It is expecially suited for the treatment of the elderly, for whom a needle treatment may represent a too intense form of stimulation. Additionally, it provides an experience of ?human touch¡± which elderly people often miss due to lack of social contacts. Ideally it is combined with other therapy options. The focus should be on finding the best form of therapy for each individual patient, as well as the increase of spontaneous activity and personal skills. A case report (shoulder-arm syndrome) will illustrate the practical side of Tuina treatment. An additional synopsis of differential diagnoses according to TCM and the corresponding diagnoses of conventional western medicine will also be discussed in this article.
