Two-scale model quantifies mixing effects on algal growth in loop photobioreactors. Numerical and analytical solutions for laminar and turbulent mixing, respectively. Laminar mixing engenders large separation between reaction and convection scales. Turbulent mixing eliminates scale separation, improves algal growth. We recommend turbulent mixing at low Re (>2300) for maximum algal growth/cost.
