Zebrafish intermediate mesoderm (IM) progenitors express tbx2a and tbx2b. tbx2a or tbx2b deficiency leads to a reduced DL in the pronephros and expanded CS glands. Retinoic acid signaling negatively regulates tbx2a/b during IM development. Notch signaling acts upstream of tbx2a/b to inhibit CS fate.
