Bioavailability and risk assessment of potentially toxic elements in garden edible vegetables and soils around a highly contaminated former mining area in Germany
The studied mine dump sites were highly polluted with potentially toxic elements (PTE). Very high concentrations of PTEs in bean, carrot and lettuce were found. Soil indices revealed contamination levels rarely reported in the literature. Human health risk assessment demonstrated that Pb was the most toxic element. Even elements with low toxicity like Mn may be of risk to human health.
