Genotoxic effects of chlorine were studied in native and transplanted green mussels.
DNA strand breaks appeared to be reliable biomarker of stress induced by chlorine.
Mussels exposed to chlorine showed significant DNA damage.
Mussels at the discharge zone are unlikely to suffer genetic damage by the chlorinated effluents.
