Yolk thyroid hormones (THs) in the eggs of the rock pigeons were manipulated. Elevated yolk TH levels enhanced embryo development and hatching success. Yolk THs reduced body mass from day 14 onwards but did not affect tarsus length. Yolk THs increased chick plasma TH levels and metabolic rate sex-specifically. The results open a new avenue for the study of hormone mediated maternal effects.
