Energy balance calculations improved when changing from a reactor in previous work to an extractor in this. Differences between wall and bulk temperature evidenced heat transfer through the packed bed. Mass flow does not depend on valve opening when this is small, due possibly to clamping. Packed bed porosity expressed by the Darcy number affects heat transfer during decompression. Transient heat transfer in the vessel wall was verified by mathematical simulation.
