A detailed analysis of the Argentat coal basin and its Hercynian substratum has made it possible to propose a simple model of their common structure. This Stephanian basin is genetically a topographic consequence of the folding of its metamorphic substratum. It was installed in a compressive offshoot of the Argentat sinistral strike-slip fault which, in this area, developed kilometre-size drag folds. Inferences are considered for the coal basins of the French Massif central and Late Hercynian faults.
