Composite silk fibroin-poly(l-lactic acid) scaffolds were obtained by electrospinning.

Intermolecular interactions between SF and PLLA were revealed for the first time.

Upon blending, the crystallisation of PLLA was hindered by the presence of SF.

SF crystallized preferentially and maintained its prevailing β-sheet structure.

The incorporation of SF into PLLA enhanced human keratinocytes adhesion and proliferation.
