A universal strategy is provided to improve water solubility of fluorescent probe. The rhodamine-based probe is used to detect GSH with high water solubility. The probe is highly selective, which can discriminate GSH from Cys and Hcy. The probe shows high selectivity for GSH in 100% aqueous solutions and living cells.
