Seismic velocity variations beneath central Mongolia: Evidence for upper mantle plumes?

Traveltime tomography reveals two plume-like structures beneath central Mongolia. One plume is deflected by the thick Gobi Desert lithosphere to surrounding regions. The second plume feeds the Khanuy Gol and Middle Gobi volcanoes. The plumes may be upwellings from the edges of subducted slabs in deep upper mantle.
