In graphite furnace AAS, the baseline sometimes shows deviations from zero during the atomization step. This phenomenon is difficult to observe if it shows up simultaneously with the atomic absorbance of the analyte, and it is also hard to compare results obtained with different instruments. Several examples of interferences are discussed, including baseline shifts and oscillations. Methods to overcome such interferences are proposed.
