Dufour's gland biosynthesizes and secretes alarm pheromones. 19 volatile compounds are produced by the gland and stored in the venom reservoir. The gland appears to be specialized in the metabolism of fatty compounds. Dufour gland utilizes fatty acids as substrates to synthesize alarm pheromones. Fatty acids are metabolized by mainly by elongation, esterification and reduction.
