Laboratory wave generation in shallow and intermediate water is considered. Comparisons are made between position control and force control. Nonlinear free wave suppression is demonstrated in both control modes. Two empirical factors are introduced, based on which good suppression is achieved. Nonlinear generation is shown to be essential for force control in shallow water.
