Hydrothermal jet drilling technology is proposed by combining the advantages of thermal spallation and high pressure water jet methods. Two cooling configurations are presented and recommended for different drilling demands. The characteristics of impact flow field of a hydrothermal jet in a confined cooling environment are revealed and influences of key factors are analyzed.
