A prospective cohort of Medicare patients was examined for nonunion risk factors. 47,437 Medicare patients had 56,492 fractures; 2.5% of fractures went to nonunion. Fracture patients were more likely to die within 1 year of fracture (p < 0.0001). Stroke, vascular disease, obesity, alcoholism, and smoking predict death (p < 0.01). People over age 65 had a lower risk-adjusted nonunion rate (p < 0.0001).
