Structural and spectroscopic features of Ca9M(PO4)7 (M = Al3+, Lu3+) whitlockites doped with Pr3+ ions

Doping Pr3+ ions creates Ca vacancies in Ca9Al(PO4)7 phosphates.

Pr3+ ions enter three sites in Ca9Al(PO4)7 and four sites in Ca9Lu(PO4)7.

The 1D2 emission shows strong concentration quenching in both whitlockites.

The 3P0 emission remains constant for all concentration in both whitlockites.

Mechanisms responsible for quenching are MPR and cross-relaxation processes.
