We studied the importance of old boreal forest for birds associated with dead wood. Old boreal mixedwoods should be considered habitats of special concern. Old productive boreal forests had higher species richness. Paludification of boreal forests had important negative effect. Tree structural diversity was the variable that best explained species richness.
