The statistics regarding the aging American
workforce, including the nursing
workforce, are quite daunting. The aging
workforce coupled with nursing's inability to recruit nurses to replace those leaving the field, creates a sense of urgency to develop strategies to retain the nurses actively engaged in the profession. There is also a sense of urgency to work to develop a subset of nurses to successfully assume leadership positions that will be vacated in the next five to ten years. Succession
planning, management, and implementation are activities that are urgently needed in the nursing
workforce today.
