The UK introduced maternal vaccination in 2012 to protect infants from birth. The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation advised continuation until 2019. Novel diagnostic methods (PCR and oral fluid) complement culture and serology. Definitions for priority groups requiring public health action have been revised. National guidelines for pertussis management have been updated to reflect this.
