Morphological instability of spherical nano iron-rich crystal in copper melt

The morphological instability of iron-rich crystal in Cu melt was observed.

The critical radius for unstable growth on the crystals is about 11 nm, consistent with Mullins-Sekerka’s instability theory.

The unstable crystals are theoretically predicted to originate with the crystals nucleating at low undercooling.

This work opens a new insight to understand nano crystal growth at initial solidification stage.
