The zeta potentials of the E. coli strain ATCC 11775 were measured in a range of different electrolyte solutions.

A simplified cell surface ionization model was developed to explain the cell surface charging properties in the aqueous solutions.

Size distribution measurements were used to show that Ca2+ ions did not cause cell adhesion but that cationic surfactants can disrupt the cells.
