A hydrophobic micro-nano roughness surface on magnesium was fabricated.

Micro-nano structure derives from duplicating ‘over growth’ regions by MAO.

7–9 μm micro-scale big pores insetting with nano-scale fine pores were fabricated.

Hydrophobicity of micro-nano surface was improved by chemical decoration and stearic treatment.
