Daphnia magna can be used to test the toxicity of Cd contaminated sediment. Cd accumulation and metallothionein in D. magna were more sensitive than mortality. Cd accumulation/metallothionein was a better alternative toxicity index. Cd chemical fractions were crucial for sediment bioavailability and biotoxicity.
