Vapor-phase dehydration of C4 unsaturated alcohols to 1,3-butadiene were performed. 1,3-Butadiene selectivity of 97.1 and 93.4% over SiO2-Al2O3was achieved from 2-buten-1-ol and 3-buten-2-ol, respectively. Modification of SiO2/Al2O3 by Ag was effective for inhibiting the catalytic deactivation. Acid catalysts promoted 3-buten-1-ol decomposition and gave low 1,3-butadiene selectivities. CeO2 showed better performance than SiO2-Al2O3 in the dehydration of 3-buten-1-ol to 1,3-butadiene.
