Metal-free cyclotrimerizations of alkynes become interesting synthetic alternative. Inter- as well as intramolecular formal cycloadditions of alkynes are possible. A variety of different reaction mechanisms depending on the substrate structure. Suitable triynes and other oligoynes allow mild reaction conditions and generate arynes. Metal-free pyridine synthesis is possible by using ynamides and nitriles.
