The third largest river in Cuba has been strongly stressed in the last century. Hydrological modifications in the last century has increased siltation and changed the mass accumulation rate of the sediments. Mercury became in a main pollutant after the construction of a chlor-alkali plant. Molluscan fauna has shifted in the last century to a low diversity assemblage. Deposit feeders mollusks became dominant and carnivorous have been displaced.
