The genetic variants within peroxisome-proliferator activated receptor-gamma 2 (rs1801282), resistin (rs3745367) and adiponectin (rs2241766) were examined in this pilot study to find a possible link between the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) in the Bangladeshi population. The correlation between frequency of SNPs in the aforementioned genes with biochemical and demographic traits related to T2D was also assessed. A total of 95 subjects (diabetic and normal glucose tolerant) were considered for the study and genotyping was done using the restriction fragment length polymorphism technique. The PPAR-γ2 and adiponectin polymorphisms did not show any significant predisposition to diabetics whereas the resistin gene polymorphism was significantly associated in terms of higher prevalence in diabetics over control individuals (P = 0.026, OR = 2.185, 95% CI = 1.092–4.375). The PPAR-γ2 polymorphism was related to higher fasting plasma glucose and HbA1c levels within the diabetic population but not within controls. The inheritance of the RETN polymorphism was related to higher LDL (P = 0.01) at 5% significance levels. For PPAR-γ2 the homozygous polymorphic genotype was absent in diabetic population while the heterozygote genotype was absent in control subjects for RETN SNP marker, while for the ADIPOQ variant the homozygous polymorphic genotype showed negligible population prevalence.
