Placentas often show fine particulate calcification in basement membranes of chorionic villi, in perivillous fibrin and in areas of infarct. We designate these calcifications as Intravillous Particulate and Intrafibrinous Microcalcification. IPMC are in higher concentrations and frequencies in intrauterine fetal demise cases and in placentas with infarcts. IPMC may be a response to local hypoxic environment.
