Inverse diffusion flame of CH4–O2 in hot syngas coflow is numerically studied.

Flame is stabilized far away from stoichiometric mixture fraction by autoignition.

Flame is established in MILD combustion regime.

The inverse diffusion configuration play a key role in achieving MILD combustion.

This provides a new understanding of the combustion process in natural gas reformer.
