A novel silica template is developed by co-condensation of TEOS and MPS.

Carbon can be tailored from worm-like to particle-like by varying MPS content.

Pore size of templated carbon can be tuned from 4.3 to 55.0 nm.

Silica templated carbon shows good electrochemical performance.
