Effect of purple prairie clover (Dalea purpurea Vent.) hay and its condensed tannins on growth performance, wool growth, nutrient digestibility, blood metabolites and ruminal fermentation in lambs fed total mixed rations

The nutritive value and feeding value of purple prairie clover conserved as hay for lamb was determined for the first time in the present study. Purple prairie clover hay had similar feeding value as alfalfa hay prepared at similar growth stage. Condensed tannin in purple prairie clover at the dietary concentration of 38 g/kg DM was found to have anti-protozoa activity and decrease blood glucose concentration. Condensed tannin in purple prairie clover at the dietary concentration of 38 g/kg DM was found to have negative effect on protein, fibre and OM digestion, but did not affect lamb growth performance.
