Different surrogacy approaches for stream macroinvertebrates in discriminating human disturbances in Central China

Higher-taxon surrogates were the mainstream approach in monitoring benthic assemblages. We assessed the efficiency of coarser taxonomic resolution and BestAgg approaches for species surrogacy of stream macroinvertebrates. The genus-level and BestAgg approaches were effective in depicting environmental relationships and distinguishing disturbances. BestAgg surrogates were less complicated but performed as well as genera, providing additional advantages.
