Split ring design allows quick and easy implantation at any desired position on peripheral nerves with minimal pressure, but still provide good electrical contact with the nerve. Split ring electrodes can be used for selective stimulation of peripheral nerves using a transverse bipolar configuration and stimulation currents of 200 A. Split ring electrodes can be used for high-quality neural recordings that can distinguish small differences in evoked compound neural action potentials (CNAPs) using a transverse differential bipolar configuration. Split ring electrodes can be used to figure out the position of desired fascicles inside peripheral nerves, as well as high-resolution stimulation where there is a need to target only the nerve fibers that elicit desired effects without altering non-target functions.
