Nicotiana benthamiana plants asymptomatically infected by Pelargonium line pattern virus show unusually high accumulation of viral small RNAs that is neither associated with DCL induction nor RDR6 activity

Accumulation of vsRNAs is extraordinarily high (~90% of total sRNAs) in Nicotiana benthamiana infected by PLPV. PLPV sRNA accumulation is independent of either DCL induction or RDR6 activity. PLPV triggers of RNA silencing are likely to be viral dsRNA replication intermediates. Distinct AGOs could be involved in anti-PLPV silencing. The symptomless condition of PLPV infection indicates that host mRNA targeting by vsRNAs, if any, does not induce phenotype.
