Mg-Al-CO3-HTs were first synthesised by co- precipitation method.

Organic-inorganic hybrid materials were then derived from these parent hydrotalcites.

Sorption of phenolic compounds was mainly adsorption and partition, while the kinetics was second order.

Adsorption capacity depended on organo-anions and pH.

π-π stacking interactions also influenced the adsorption capacity.
