It is believed that macrophages may play a role in early stages of blackleg. C. chauvoei remains viable after internalization by murine and bovine macrophages. Macrophages with C. chauvoei spores showed an anti-inflammatory cytokines profile. These results suggests that macrophages may play a role in the pathogenesis of blackleg.
