HSV-1 UL24 is sufficient to repress expression of several viral genes.
Substitution of highly conserved residues in UL24 abrogates the repression function.
A high GC content is not sufficient to render genes susceptible to repression by UL24.
UL24 reduction of viral RNA levels does not appear to be due to altered RNA stability.
