A novel method to distinguish auto-terms and cross-terms in time–frequency analysis. Improves performance measures for objective comparison of time–frequency methods. Reliable also for auto-terms of unequal amplitudes and non-linear frequencies. Automatic optimal time–frequency analysis of HRV signals can be obtained.
