Mass balance observations and reconstruction for Batysh Sook Glacier, Tien Shan, from 2004 to 2016

Re-establishment of long-term monitoring for Batysh Sook Glacier (measured mass balance: –0.43 ± 0.16 m w.e. a–1, 2011–16). Good agreement between profile, contour line and model based extrapolation methods (range of 0.09 m w.e. a–1, 2011–16). Reconstructed series provide information with high temporal resolution on glacier mass balance for a data-sparse region. Modelled mean annual balance of –0.31 ± 0.34 m w.e. a–1 for the reconstructed period 2004–10. Overall mass loss found of –0.39 ± 0.26 m w.e. a–1 (2004–16) supports indicated imbalance of glaciers in the region.
