We report the first unambiguous date for the ‘Millennium Eruption’ of Changbaishan. We used a radiocarbon signal in a tree killed by the eruption to obtain the date. We reanalysed a Greenland ice core to further constrain the date. The new date facilitates investigation of the eruption's impacts. Tree ring proxies do not reveal any significant climate impact of the eruption.
