Estradiol replacement altered communicative and social behaviors in female rats. Numbers of USV calls were decreased, and behavioral interactions changed, by estradiol. A sociability test of cagemates revealed a preference for a familiar over a novel rat. Estradiol affected gene expression in a brain region-specific manner. The SON had the greatest number of gene changes caused by estradiol treatment.
