Fatigue assessment on butt welded splices in plates of different thicknesses

Experimental S-N curve of 95% survival probability was established for butt welded splices in plates of different thicknesses. A center semi-circular surface crack with 0.075mm initial depth was recommended for the fatigue crack propagation analysis. It was found that the numerical approach would provide a lower SIF level than that obtained through the analytical approach. The calculation formula for the fatigue crack propagation life in terms of arbitrary initial crack between 0.075mm and 0.4mm was derived.
