Chicken-based WNV surveillance was performed in a well studied endemic area (Central Macedonia, Greece).
The sensitivity of this system in periods of low WNV activity (2014–15) was evaluated and compared to previous years.
During both years, low virus activity was detected serologically in backyard chickens.
No human cases were reported in the study area during 2014 and in the country during 2015.
The findings suggest that the system can detect low-level WNV transmission, in the absence of human neuroinvasive cases.
