The DSSAT-CERES sorghum model was adapted for simulations of sweet sorghum optimal rooting depth for rainfed production. Optimal rooting depth was between 110 and 140 cm. Early planting required deeper rooting because of less frequent precipitation. Optimal rooting resulted in 25–32% less irrigation.
