Reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) was prepared and used as light-weighted support.

Ni–Co/r-GO catalyst was synthesized with the electroless deposition technology.

Hydrogen could be produced from Ni–Co/r-GO-catalyzed hydrolysis of NaBH4.

H2 production rate at 1280 mL/min/ (g cat) was obtained using Ni–Co/r-GO catalyst.

The activation energy of the catalyzed hydrolysis of NaBH4 was 55.12 kJ mol−1.
