The incidence of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) continues to rise in Eastern Denmark. A total of 62% of all OPSCC cases included were human papillomavirus-positive (HPV+), showing a high HPV prevalence. HPV16 was the predominant type (86%), followed by HPV33 (6%), and HPV35 (4%). Additional HPV-types were also identified, including HPV18, 45, 56 and 67. The burden of HPV+ OPSCC in Eastern Denmark is expected to surpass that of cervical cancer in 2016.
